Privacy Policy

How MakeMyRates collects, uses and protects your personal information.

This Privacy Policy describes how MakeMyRates collects, uses and shares personal information. We follow the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (the “Act”) and applicable provincial privacy laws. Below you will find what information we collect from our customers, how we use it, and how to reach us with questions, feedback or complaints about our privacy practices. This policy covers all personal information we collect, including through our website. Our website may link to other websites that are not covered by this policy, so we encourage you to read their privacy policies as well.

What is Personal Information?

Personal information means any information about an identifiable individual. It does not include the name, title, business address or business phone number of an employee of an organization.

Children’s Privacy

If you are under 18, please ask a parent or guardian for permission before you send personal information to us, or to anyone else, online. We encourage parents to take part in their children’s online activities and to know which websites they visit.

What Personal Information Do We Collect and Why?

We only collect personal information for clear, limited purposes and by fair and lawful means. You can browse our website without giving us any personal information. If you choose to share it, our partner brokers may use it to prepare your quotes.

We may collect your contact details (such as your name, postal code, email address and phone number) when you:

  • Request an insurance quote
  • Send us a message through our website, contact form or online chat
  • Sign up to receive emails or other communications from us

When you request a quote, we also collect the details needed to price it, such as information about your vehicle, driving record, home and insurance history. We use this information to handle your request, answer your questions, and show you relevant advertising.

We may also keep a record of your quote requests and the offers you have received (your “history”). This helps us understand what you are looking for, improve our service, and let you know about updates or other information related to the services you asked about. From time to time we may send you Marketing Offers, meaning special offers or information from us or our partners. You can opt out of Marketing Offers at any time, as explained below. If you opt out, we keep your contact details on a separate list so that we respect your choice.

Our website includes an automated chat assistant that answers general questions. It does not give insurance advice. If you share your contact details in the chat, we may treat the conversation as a quote request.

Cookies and Advertising

Cookies help our website work, including our multi-step quote form. If you prefer, you can turn cookies off in your browser settings, but some parts of our website may then stop working properly.

MakeMyRates and its partners use cookies and similar tools to understand trends, run our website, see how visitors use it and measure our advertising. This includes the Meta Pixel, which tells Facebook and Instagram when someone who saw our ads visits our website or requests a quote, so we can measure and improve those ads. The details you type into our forms are not sent to Meta. You can manage the ads you see through your Facebook or Instagram ad settings.

To Whom Do We Disclose Personal Information, and Why?

MakeMyRates is not an insurance company or an insurance broker. We work with licensed Ontario insurance brokers. We share your personal information only to fulfil your quote request. When you send a request through our website, we pass the necessary details to our broker partners, who use them only to compare rates from the insurers they have access to and to find you the best options available. Sharing your information with our broker partners is an essential part of our service and of the quoting process.

We also use trusted service providers to run our business, such as website hosting, our customer contact system, our chat assistant and email. They may only use your information to provide those services to us.

We never sell, rent or trade your personal information.

How Is MakeMyRates Paid?

Our service is free for Ontario consumers. We are a referral platform, not an insurance company or a broker. We are paid a referral fee by our licensed partner brokers when you request a quote through our website.

This referral fee does not increase your insurance premium or change the prices you are quoted. All quotes, coverage advice and policies come from our licensed partner brokers, not from MakeMyRates.

Are the Quotes Final?

No. Any quotes, rate estimates and coverage information are subject to each insurer's review, eligibility rules and approval, including checks of your driving record and claims history. Your coverage, limits and exclusions are set by the wording of the policy you buy.

Consent and Opt-Out Policy

MakeMyRates uses the personal information it collects to provide auto, home and bundled insurance quotes and related services. Any information we ask for in our website forms is clearly identified, and we only collect it when you complete the form, give your consent and submit it to us.

In general, we rely on your consent to collect, use and share personal information, subject to our opt-out policy. For sensitive personal information, we will ask for your express consent unless the law allows otherwise.

Opting Out of Marketing Offers

If you no longer want to receive Marketing Offers, you can opt out at any time by:

  • Using the unsubscribe link in any of our emails
  • Replying “STOP” to any MakeMyRates text or WhatsApp message
  • Calling us at 647-366-8171 and asking to be removed
  • Emailing us at rates@makemyrates.com with the same request

We will process your request within 10 business days.

When you give us personal information, we treat that as your consent to collect, use and share it for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy or explained to you at the time. However, we may use or share personal information without your consent where the law requires or allows it, for example to:

  • Investigate a possible breach of federal, provincial or foreign law
  • Protect or defend our legal rights
  • Comply with laws, regulations or lawful requests from government, including for national security or law enforcement

We keep personal information only as long as we need it for these purposes, or as the law requires.

Safeguards

We keep personal information in electronic records and protect it with a mix of technical, contractual, administrative and physical safeguards. For example, information you send us through our website is protected by industry-standard SSL encryption.

How to Access and Correct Your Personal Information

If you ask, MakeMyRates will tell you whether we hold personal information about you. You can see, correct or ask us to delete your information by contacting us. Once we have confirmed your identity, we will make the changes and reply within a reasonable time, and no later than 30 days.

In some cases we may not be able to give you access to all of the information we hold. If we refuse a request, we will tell you why in writing, and you have the right to challenge our decision.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time as our practices change. If we make a significant change, we will let you know in advance by posting a notice on our website or by email. Please check this page from time to time to stay informed about how we protect your personal information.
